Hi I am a year 7 student at Pukekohe Intermediate. Recently our class (RM23) have been studying the Maui’s Dolphin. I am writing this email because the population of the Maui’s Dolphin has declined. 30 years ago the population of the Maui’s dolphin was over 1000, in 30 years it has dropped to an estimated number of 111. This means 10% are still alive. Now they are ranked as critically endangered.
I have a couple of solutions to stop the decline of the population by banning speedboats and nylon fishing in their habitat. Nylon fishing nets are a major problem for the Maui’s Dolphins. This is because the Maui’s Dolphins are very curious and may sense the fish that are trapped in the nets. They will go over and get caught unable to swim backwards. W.W.F have already tried to make a difference but we really need more support from the government please HELP save the Maui’s dolphin.
